Description

• Moving to my new home gave me the opportunity to craft an environment that authentically expresses how I create, rest and celebrate my life’s greatest passions.

• Using an earthy-inspired material and colour palette, I incorporated a continuous, dual material palette (wood for calmness and stone for stability) and a dual colour palette for the curtains (light green for rejuvenation in the bedroom and red for passion in the study area) to facilitate my productivity.

Challenges Faced & Overcome

• There was an open dead zone beside the staircase in the attic with no privacy.

• I addressed the first challenge by designing an integrated long desk, recessed sofa, and screened bookshelves, providing vast desk space (large enough to house my physical modelling tools setup, 3D printer, and desktop setup), a comfortable spot to read and take naps, and ample storage spaces to display my hobbies while retaining my privacy and the openness of the area.

• The budget to translate my vision of an immersive material atmosphere for the study area and bedroom using laminate panels were higher than expected.

• I solved the problem by removing lighting I would rarely use such as ambient lights for every cubby hole in the bookshelf.

• There was a bare storeroom beside the study area, where only the circuit breaker occupied a small portion of the available floor space.

• I solved this challenge by transforming it into a collection room (inspired by the maple wood display shelves and matt black backing design language in Apple stores) for displaying my Apple collection and especially large products like iMacs and desktop boxes).
